Take-Home Folders
Each student will have a "take-home folder". This folder is green and has a pocket for papers to keep at home and a pocket for papers to bring back to school. Each student will take his/her folder home every night. Please go over everything in the folder each night and return the folder with your child the next day. Please keep the clip chart calendar in your child’s folder, but don't forget to go over it each night! This is a great opportunity to check up on how your child is behaving each day at school.

Weekly Homework
The students will bring homework home on Mondays. Each Monday, your child's take-home folder will contain the weekly story (from literature book), a spelling homework page, a math homework page (sometimes assigned later in the week depending on the skills covered), and a homework note. The weekly spelling words and vocabulary words will be listed on the homework note. Although we practice these words at school, students will benefit from extra practice of the words at home. The vocabulary words do not need to be spelled from memory like the spelling words. Each Friday, the students will take a comprehension test based on the weekly story, a spelling test, a vocabulary test, and a math test. Please return the take-home folder and the blue literature book in the backpack because we will need to use the literature books in class each day.

At-Home Reading
Most of our first grade homework is reading practice. First grade readers should read aloud every night for a minimum of 15 minutes if possible. They will be expected to read the assigned weekly story (from the literature textbook) each night of the week until the vocabulary is mastered. In addition to that reading, I will also send home a book buddy bag filled with books at your child's "just right" reading level. These books should be read aloud multiple times throughout the week. Please return the book buddy bag every day! As students change reading levels, the books in their bags will change as well. You may jot me a note if the books in the bag seem too difficult or too easy for your child. Don’t forget that it is equally as important for you to read to your child as it is for your child to read to you!
